Brunch with the SLWB Bunch celebrated our New Year ( also referred to as Avurudu and Puthandu). Both Sinhalese and Tamils celebrate their New Year on April 14. In Canada it is mainly celebrated independently by each community. SLWB celebrated it by featuring food, music and traditions from both groups and provided an opportunity for everyone to enjoy food from both communities. The event had a great turn out and was attended by few key representatives of our communities including Jim Karygiannis, Councillor of Ward 39 and John Argue, the Sri Lanka Coordinator at Amnesty International Canada. The event received positive feedback, most notably for providing a chance to explore the similarities and differences amongst traditional Sinhalese and Tamil New Year celebrations.
